Picture This National and Local Meetings

The specific Picture This objectives:

  1. Convene leadership that represent the following constituencies – research, practice, policy advocates;

  2. Develop Consensus on key issues – identify the top 3 issues within juvenile justice system

  3. Communicate – disseminate the top 3 issues (and related information) to local news representatives and the entertainment industry to encourage stories in print / broadcast journalism and online news platforms and accurate on-screen depictions news reports and stories…to Picture This!

  • Picture This National Forums:
  • EIC’s Picture This forums bring leading health experts and media professionals together to bridge the gap between advocates and communicators, in order to enhance public health messages through the use of entertainment media.

    IMPLEMENTATION: EIC’s Picture This program creates the opportunity for members of the health and social fields to condense and contextualize the key issues in their areas of expertise. The program channels the experts information and transports it to the entertainment industry in an effort to inspire stories that could lead to social change.

  • Picture This:Local Meetings:
  • EIC has developed a model to collaborate with Congressional Representatives, local TV stations and stakeholders to bring greater understanding of the topic priorities from the Office of Justice Programs to the public, to ultimately enhance collaboration between the community-based organization and local media.

    The goal is to develop an understanding between media and advocates through a process that convenes leadership, develops consensus, and effectively communicates the program areas under the Office of Justice Department.

  • Implementation:
  • EIC hosts a meeting in a local television studio to create an open dialogue comprised of a panel (3-4 panelists) from the media, communication, and entertainment fields with a strategically selected audience (15-20 members) consisting of stakeholders, health experts, local officials and other key leaders in the Orlando community to discuss and find a consensus that delineates the top 3 to 5 concerns when addressing mental health in the community, and within the Orlando media space.

  • Entertainment Briefings:
  • Hosting an entertainment briefing is an opportunity to present the accurate information and voice real stories to the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. These meetings are held at television and/or studio lots to convenience the ability for the creative community to obtain accurate information. The briefings provide information to the writers which include major concerns, challenges, appropriate terminology, myth/reality statements, and personal stories to present the entertainment community with accurate content material to use on screen, or during the writing process.

    IMPLEMENTATION: EIC will plan and implement two entertainment industry briefings in collaboration with studio/network hosts and entertainment industry unions/guilds for writers, producers, actors, and development and standards executives. The audience of about 30 people is composed of entertainment industry professionals and a 3-4 person panel of experts, consumers and service providers.

    Post Meetings: Resource materials are distributed to creative community. EIC will follow up with interested shows and offer technical assistance (EIC’s First Draft Services) and topic-specific information for story ideas and character development. EIC will continue to send updates or Spotlight On highlights to the creative community well after the meeting takes place, to continue to resonate the message.

  • Actors and Writers Workshops:
  • EIC’s entertainment workshops for specific health and social- related issues encourages creators of television shows and movies to accurately portray onscreen. The purpose is to let these treatment professionals know what the entertainment industry is being told about these issues.

    IMPLEMENTATION: EIC will plan and implement briefings at an industry guild/association for its membership. The audience of approximately 50 people is composed of guild members and a 5-7 person panel is comprised of writers, actors (depending upon the guild), casting directors. Also present are health experts, consumers and service providers,

    PROCESS:A briefing for an industry guild/association – open to its membership . EIC is currently collaborating with 12 major entertainment partners including the following: WGAe, WGAw, AFTRA, SAG, WIF, NATPE, NAB, IDA IFTA, EMA, HRTS and NCTA. This is usually held at the guild office as a dinner meeting. The presentation includes conversation about the health/social issues as they relates to the central character and the supporting roles of family members, friends, employers.

    POST MEETINGS: Resource materials are distributed to the guild members. EIC will follow up with individual technical assistance (EIC’s First Draft Services) and topic specific information for story ideas and character development. EIC will continue to send updates or Spotlight On highlights to the creative community well after the meeting takes place to continue to resonate the message.

  • Think Tank:
  • The purpose of the Entertainment & Media Communication (EMCI) Think Tank is to convene experts from the medical, communication and entertainment industry fields to collaboratively discuss, brainstorm and develop a new direction for health and socials concerns in America.

    The multidisciplinary approach of a Think Tank is focused on each specialty area to apply new ways of understanding to effectively communicate the complexities of an issue. The Think Tank provides an opportunity to discuss significant obstacles, issues and new developments in a specific health or social field. Bringing together three different perspectives creates a synergistic occasion for raising greater awareness, and generating new perceptions of an issue within society.

    IMPLEMENTATION: Each group of experts has the opportunity to discuss and/or present key issues. Innovative thinking is encouraged, as one of EIC’s primary principles is to be non judgmental in approaching critical thinking about important health and social issues. EIC believes that change comes from creating opportunities for productive thinking that can be focused toward measurable results.

    PROCESS:

    The event is structured to provide attendees an opportunity to:

    • Integrate medical, communication, and entertainment/media expertise.

    • Create an enhanced cooperative effort with regard to understanding and communicating about a particular health issue.

    • Break through existing silos

    • Develop a consensus or identify key areas of focus for elevating health-related issues in America.

    • Gain insight from multiple disciplines to create a blueprint for a shift in thinking about a particular health or social issue area.
